Intel spun out its driver-assist subsidiary Mobileye Wednesday and raised $861 million in the initial public offering. Mobileye’s stock was up about 34% during trading Wednesday from the initial public offering price of $21 a share. MobilEye’s REM project creates fairly sparse maps, but includes more than just lane geometry. In particular REM watches cars as they pause at intersections, creep forward and make turns to know where the sightlines are, and just where the drivers actually drive — not just where the lines on the road are. One of Tesla’s biggest assets is their fleet, which gathers data to help them train their machine learning. There are well over a million Teslas out there, which take regular software updates and help in the quest.

In simple terms, Mobileye develops the “eyes” of the car, enabling it to understand its surroundings just like a human driver would. EyeQ Ultra utilizes an array of four classes of proprietary accelerators, each built for a specific task. At a mere 176 TOPS, the EyeQ Ultra is much more efficient than other AV solutions, delivering the necessary performance and price-point required for consumer-level AVs. Mobileye has agreements with six OEMs, including BMW, Nissan and Volkswagen, to collect that data on vehicles equipped with the EyeQ4 chip, which is used to power the advanced driver assistance system. On fleet vehicles, Mobileye collects data from an after-market product it sells to commercial operators.

On the other hand, if Waymo is right that driverless technology needs to be built from the ground up, Mobileye’s work on lidar and HD maps will give it a head start. So will its decision to test driverless cars in a half-dozen cities around the world. While Musk has dismissed lidar as a crutch, Shashua argues that redundant sensors are essential to achieving better-than-human driving performance.

Mobileye is one of the leaders of the smart-car wave, quickly becoming a household name and source of Intel pride. After gaining unanimous approval from the board of directors, Intel is eyeing mid-2022 for the initial public offering (IPO). Intel stock has seen a fortuitous jump on the news, currently trending close to 5% up on the day. As per the announcement, Intel will continue to operate as the majority owner of the anticipated tech company. Almost all started using very expensive LIDARs that clearly cost too much for a production vehicle.
